Being found by AI assistants

People increasingly ask an AI assistant about a business before visiting its website. What that changes, and what an Alias guide does about it.

Do AI assistants affect how customers find a business?

AI assistants have become a mainstream route to finding a business, and the shift has been fast. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults found 45% had used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% the year before, with 63% of those users saying they trust the recommendations. The practical consequence is that a person may form a view of a business from an AI answer without ever reaching its website. What that answer says depends on what the assistant can read, which is why the material a business publishes about itself matters more than it did when a customer always arrived at the homepage first.

Why do AI assistants sometimes get facts about a business wrong?

AI assistants answer from whatever they can retrieve, and for most businesses that is not the business's own website. Muck Rack's May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini found earned third-party media accounts for roughly 84% of AI citations. So an assistant describing a company is usually assembling it from directories, news coverage, forums and reviews, some of which are outdated or about a different organisation with a similar name. Two things reduce the error rate: publishing the facts plainly in a form a crawler can read, since AI crawlers do not run JavaScript and cannot see content that loads after the page does, and keeping those facts current so the correct version is the one available to be retrieved.

Does an Alias guide help a business get found by AI?

An Alias guide is built for people asking questions on a business's own site, not for search engines, so it is not an AI visibility product and Alias does not sell it as one. What it does produce is the thing that underpins visibility: a single current set of approved answers to the questions people actually ask, maintained as part of the managed service rather than left to drift. The same reporting shows which questions the material could not answer, which is the most direct guide to what a business should publish next. A business whose facts are correct, current and consistently stated is in a better position with an AI assistant than one whose answers live only inside a PDF or a menu.
